Work has begun on the new $5 million extension to the Northwest Community Health Centre, Health Minister, Mr Gordon Nuttall announced today.
The Minister said the work would involve a renovation to an existing building, as well as the construction of a major extension.
"The $5 million extension will bring together a range of health services for the people of Brisbane's north west suburbs." Mr Nuttall said.
"These services will include indigenous health, home and community care, allied health, child health, child development, child and youth mental health service, self-care independent haemodialysis, visiting women's services, and other visiting services.
"It will also consolidate services which are currently located in separate facilities. These include the Ashgrove Child Health Centre, the Everton Park Child Development Unit, the Child and Youth Mental Health Service at Enoggera and the Adult Community Health Service on Coopers Camp Road, Bardon.
"Permanent fences will be erected as a priority to reduce the impact of building works on the surrounding neighbourhood."
Member for Ferny Grove Geoff Wilson said the new centre would be of significant benefit to the local community.
"The value of a modern community health facility for north-west Brisbane is unquestioned," Mr Wilson said.
"The new North West Community Health Centre will allow people living in Brisbane's north western suburbs to access a wide range of health services in one convenient location."
Local resident and member of the Brisbane North Division of General Practice Dr Jayne Murdoch said community consultation for the centre was thorough.
"Being involved with the community consultation for the new centre, local GPs will collaborate with Queensland Health and other community groups in decisions about services in the new centre." she said.
The Community Health Centre will feature the work of local artists and three landscaped outdoor areas including an interactive child play space, a physical rehabilitation area and an Indigenous garden.
Construction is expected to be completed by the middle of next year.
