Work is underway on a $16 million project to widen Samford Road to four lanes between Cobalt and Arbor streets at Ferny Grove.
Main Roads Minister Paul Lucas said the project also included installing traffic signals at the Upper Kedron Road and Claverton Street intersection, and upgrading traffic signals at Tramway Street.
"This work, which is expected to be complete by July 2006, will improve safety and ease traffic congestion in the Brisbane-Samford corridor," he said.
State Member for Ferny Grove Geoff Wilson said widening Samford Road from two to four lanes was needed to cater for continuing traffic growth in this busy corridor.
"This is about alleviating peak-hour traffic congestion and improving safety for motorists.
"More than 22,000 vehicles a day use this busy section of road.
ââ¬ÅThis project is the second of two stages to duplicate the existing roadway between Cobalt Street and Ferny Way.
"Stage one was completed in April 2004 and involved upgrading Ferny Way intersection to match the four-lane duplication works and included putting in traffic signals at the Arbor Street intersection,'' he said.
Geoff Wilson said Main Roads had briefed state and local government representatives and Brisbane City Council officers during the planning and detailed design stages of the project.
"Main Roads used public displays and newsletters to keep the community up-to-date as the project progressed,'' Geoff Wilson said. Sign Up for free e-mail updates!
