Residents in north west Brisbane will have better access to a broad range of health services following the opening of a new community health centre at Keperra.

Health Minister Stephen Robertson today officially opened the North West Community Health Centre which will deliver services from breast screening to child health.

Mr Robertson said the centre was the result of a $6.2 million redevelopment of the former Keperra Hospital which previously offered renal dialysis and respite care.

Local State Member for Ferny Grove Geoff Wilson said the new centre would be of significant benefit to the local community.

“The community health centre will bring together a range of health services for people living in Brisbane’s north western suburbs,” Mr Robertson said.

“Through the centre we have rolled out adult and child community health, breast screening, indigenous health, child and youth mental health and self-care haemodialysis.

“We will also provide several allied health services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, dietetics and podiatry.”

Mr Robertson said the centre offered an improved integration of health services, reducing the need for local residents to visit more than one venue for different areas of community health.

“We have consolidated services which were previously located in separate facilities including the Ashgrove Child Health Centre, the Everton Park Child Development Unit, the Child and Youth Mental Health Service at Enoggera and the Adult Community Health Service at Ashgrove,” he said.

“This way we are able to provide a more efficient service while working out of a much better integrated facility.

Geoff Wilson said the recent establishment of a community consultative committee at the Centre was totally new for the Prince Charles Hospital Health Service District.

“The Committee’s task will be ensuring the voice of the community is heard,” Geoff Wilson said.

“The value of a modern community health facility for north-west Brisbane is unquestioned.

“When combined with this unique partnership between the local community and Queensland Health, better delivery of services will be ensured.

“The new facility is at an easily accessible location and will promote much closer collaboration between health professionals to meet the needs of individuals and families.

“The North West Community Health Centre is a model of how Queensland Health is helping to build healthier communities.”

The North West Community Health Centre also features the work of local artists and three landscaped outdoor areas including an interactive child play space and a physical rehabilitation area.

It is part of The Prince Charles Hospital Health Service District and located at 59 Corrigan Street, Keperra.
