The $5.4 million upgrade of the Energex substation at Arana Hills is on track to keep pace with the growing needs of north western Brisbane residents.

Geoff Wilson MP State Member for Ferny Grove inspected the substation site yesterday with Energex engineering and construction staff.

Geoff welcomed the upgrade which included the recent delivery of two high powered transformers.

“This is great news for residents as it will increase the reliability of electricity supply during the storm season.” Geoff Wilson said.

Energex is doubling the capacity of its substation at Arana Hills to meet growing electricity demand in the area.  The project involves the replacement of two aged 10/12.5 MVA transformers with two high capacity 15/25 MVA transformers.  Energex will also upgrade the switching equipment that provides safety protection and allows electricity current to be switched around the network.

The upgraded substation, expected to be commissioned by the end of this year, will provide greater network capacity to residential and commercial customers in Arana Hills, Ferny Hills, Ferny Grove, Everton Hills, McDowall and Bunya.

Acting General Manager Works, Chris Arnold said the work on the upgrade of the substation is on track and on budget.

“This project will double the capacity of the substation to meet the increasing demand for electricity in north west Brisbane,” Mr Arnold said.

“While every power network experiences power interruptions due to storms, vehicles hitting poles or wildlife activity, the work to increase capacity at Arana Hills will improve the reliability of supply to customers in the region by providing greater flexibility during times of network faults,” he said.

“Since being elected as the local Member of Parliament, I have worked closely with Energex to improve the reliability and capacity of electricity supply in my electorate,” Geoff Wilson said.

“By providing greater reliability in the local network, this upgrade work can’t be finished soon enough,” Geoff Wilson said.
