Parents and teachers at Ferny Grove State School are celebrating the official opening of a new $1.83 million General Learning Block.

Representing Rod Welford MP, Minister for Education, local State Member for Ferny Grove, Geoff Wilson, said the new building would help accommodate the school’s growing student population.

“The new building comprises four classrooms, two withdrawal rooms, two practical learning areas, an outdoor learning area and a teacher preparation area,” Geoff Wilson said.

“It’s a timely addition to Ferny Grove State School’s resources.

“The school has seen a steady increase in enrolment for several years now, and this new building will help to accommodate this growth well into the future.

“The ground floor play and games area can be transformed into additional classrooms with very little extra work – a wonderful example of flexible learning spaces.”

Geoff Wilson said the new facilities were part of a record outlay on capital works by the Beattie Government in 2005-06.

“In this financial year, we are spending a record $455.1 million on education capital works,” Geoff Wilson said.

“This is to ensure that our schools have comfortable and safe facilities that can adapt to the demands of a modern curriculum.

“We are also reshaping Queensland's education and training systems to cater for students' individual needs and help them reach their full potential – something Ferny Grove State School knows a lot about.

“For several years now Ferny Grove State School has hosted its Expressive Arts Week, a terrific example of giving all students an opportunity to shine.”

Geoff Wilson said the Queensland Government had provided $1.13 million for the construction of the new facilities, with a contribution of $700,000 from the Commonwealth.
