State Member for Ferny Grove, Geoff Wilson, today congratulated four new trade apprentices from North-West Brisbane who have secured a job with the State Government.
They are among 101 new apprentices and trainees taken on across Queensland by QBuild, a business unit of the Department of Public Works this year.
Successful applicants from North West Brisbane are Greg Forster from Arana Hills (refrigeration mechanics), Nathan Blackburn from Ferny Grove (carpentry), Matthew Hutchinson from Samford (carpentry) and Jason Hynes from Stafford (carpentry).
âThese young locals had to beat tough competition to secure their trade training positions,â Geoff Wilson said.
âMore than 1,500 applications for trade apprenticeships were received from across Queensland â a 50 percent increase on last year.â
Geoff Wilson said QBuild took on apprentices in a range of building trades each year.
âThis yearâs intake brings to 850 the total number of QBuild apprentice and training positions created since the Beattie Government was elected,â Geoff Wilson said.
âThis state governmentâs training initiative is a real investment in the future of our state's building industry with many QBuild apprentices eventually working in the private sector.â
Geoff Wilson said the QBuild apprentices would gain experience in the maintenance of government buildings, including schools as well as helping construct new building projects throughout their region.
