Minister for Transport and Main Roads Paul Lucas announced the start of the community awareness program for the $38 million Mitchelton to Keperra Rail Line Duplication Program.

The track duplication is a key component of the State Government’s announced South East Queensland Infrastructure Plan and Program and will provide benefits including improved track capacity, more service flexibility and upgrades at the Oxford Park and Grovely Rail Stations.

“This upgrade involves duplicating the track between Mitchelton and Keperra, and is part of the government’s commitment to upgrading the metropolitan rail network including increases to peak hour service levels,” Mr Lucas said.

“Meeting growing demand on the busy Ferny Grove line is crucial to ensure the continued efficiency and cost effectiveness of the essential Citytrain services.”

“By providing this extra track capacity, QR will be able to run additional peak hour services in the future.”

State Member for Ferny Grove Geoff Wilson said the community awareness program would give local residents the opportunity to review the draft Environmental and Planning Study and provide comments.

“This is the chance for the public to have its say,” Geoff Wilson said.

“Construction of the new track and station upgrades is expected to begin in late 2006 and be completed by late 2007.

“This will be a major boost to public transport in the area and I encourage the community to talk to QR about the proposals.”

The station upgrade works will include the provision of disabled access, additional parking, new station buildings, landscaping, upgrading lighting and CCTV security cameras and new shelters.
