Energy Minister, John Mickel and Member for Ferny Grove, Geoff Wilson today inspected progress of works at the Arana Hills substation.  The upgrade will increase capacity and improve reliability for 10 000 residents and businesses in north Brisbane including the Hills District and Ferny Grove suburb.

Mr Mickel said a significant milestone had been reached in the $5.4 million upgrade of the electricity substation and distribution network.

“The work will double the capacity of the substation and to date includes the commissioning of two upgraded 25 MVA transformers and associated switchgear,” Mr Mickel said.

“Installation work has been progressing since June last year.” Mr Mickel said.  “The completed work on the north side will cater for increased demand and population growth in Brisbane’s northern suburbs into the years ahead.”

Geoff Wilson said Energex were spending $2 million per day upgrading its electricity network, including the rapidly growing north side of Brisbane.

“This work will help meet the additional electricity demand needed by the increasing population as well as improve reliability for those already at home in the area.

This upgrade forms part of the record $536 million ENERGEX is spending on the electricity network in the 2005/06 financial year. In addition a further $186 million has been committed to maintenance and operation of the network.

“Every power network experiences power interruptions due to storms and vehicles hitting poles,” Geoff Wilson said.  “This is particularly a problem in the Ferny Grove electorate where there is lots of vegetation and wildlife.”

“The upgrading of substations in the area will improve the reliability of supply to customers in the wider area, by providing greater flexibility during network faults,” Geoff Wilson said.

“I am pleased that ENERGEX is meeting these challenges head-on and we are seeing the results here today,” Geoff Wilson said.
