A major upgrade to Ferny Grove Railway Station means passengers will have access to an extra 123 car parking spaces from today, bringing the total number of available spaces to 546.
Local Member for Ferny Grove, Geoff Wilson, has officially opened the new ParkânâRide facility saying the $1.5 million upgrade was in line with the areaâs booming population growth.
"Drivers can get to the new car parking area through the existing station car park on Samford Road and will soon be able to gain access from the other side of the station via Conavalla Street,â Geoff Wilson said.
âTransLinkâs commitment is to get more people out of their cars and onto public transport and we can help do this by improving our public infrastructure. Extra bike lockers have also been added and the feeder bus services improved.â Geoff Wilson said.
"The longest walk from the new car parking area to the station is about 350 metres, which rail passengers at other Citytrain stations have indicated is an acceptable distance to formal parking spaces."
Geoff Wilson said the popularity of the train service between Ferny Grove and the city had generated a heavy demand for car parking spaces at railway stations along the line from the terminus into Mitchelton.
âWe have previously improved the core existing parking area, and leased additional space from the Ferny Grove Tavern which freed up some additional spaces," Geoff Wilson said.
"One of the other major successful improvements is a 'kiss-and-ride' set-down area for commuters, to encourage them to get delivered to the station rather than driving themselves and parking there.
âAs part of the Governmentâs long term plan to address future park n' ride demands, a masterplan for the station is being developed,â Geoff Wilson said. âTranslink will examine the planâs commercial viability by seeking expressions of interest from the private sector for a joint venture partnership.â
âI expect the masterplan to be presented to the State Government in September 2006,â Geoff Wilson said. âThe objective is to provide commuters and the community with improved access to public transport.â
âThis is about getting people using public transport facilities, services and networks that are fully integrated co-ordinated, and environmentally friendly,â Geoff Wilson said.
