The Beattie Government has committed $5 million towards a master planned transport hub for Ferny Grove rail station, Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Paul Lucas, and Member for Ferny Grove, Geoff Wilson, said today.
The Minister undertook an inspection of the rail station and announced that concept plans for the precinct had now been developed.
âThe concepts envisage a major public transport terminus with a minimum 1 000 car parks and mixed residential and commercial development,â Minister Lucas said.
âOther features of the concept include improved bus-rail interchange and improved pedestrian and cycling facilities.â
âA major station precinct upgrade would provide commuters and the community with improved access to public transport, shops and other commercial opportunities.â
Mr Lucas said that a master planning exercise will assess the commercial viability of the site as a potential joint venture partnership with private industry.
"In the next couple of months, TransLink will be looking for expressions of interest from industry and businesses who wish to be involved in this exciting urban development project."
âIf there is commercial interest to make this project a reality, we will then undertake detailed consultation with key stakeholders, local businesses and the general community before the plan is finalised,â Minister Lucas said.
Member for Ferny Grove, Geoff Wilson, welcomed the announcement as great news for the Ferny Grove community.
"Ferny Grove rail station will be the focus for the redevelopment and ideally become the community 'heart', where people shop, work, meet, relax and live."
"The development will cluster a variety of businesses around a high quality transport service."
"The Beattie Government has already improved access to Ferny Grove Rail Station, with $1.5 million spent to expand the current parking area at the end of the track reserve and a permanent commuter bus service from Samford."
"This provided a park n' ride with 123 car park bays, improved pavements, extra lighting and security and was opened to the public recently," Mr Wilson said.
"The major station upgrade is part of the TransLink Network Plan, which sets out the future direction for public transport improvements throughout South East Queensland,â Geoff Wilson said.
Mr Wilson said the long term objective was about getting more people onto public transport and relieving congestion throughout the north western suburbs.
"Every car left at the station car park for the day reduces peak hour congestion and harmful exhaust emissions," he said
The Beattie Government is firmly committed to providing a long term solution to address future park n' ride and travel demands.
