Exciting Step in Ferny Grove Prep

24, January 2008

Queensland enters a new phase in education in 2008 when the full intake of 54,000 Prep students start their first day of school on 29 January.

Geoff is confident that schools in Ferny Grove are ready to accept their full Prep group this month. State, Catholic and Independent schools will welcome into Prep the full cohort of children who turn five by June 30 this year to start their full-time education.

Students in Ferny Grove will be part of Queensland’s educational history as they begin their school lives at Prep. The 2007  Prep students will start Year 1 in 2008 better prepared for lifelong learning. Prep children, parents and teachers gain enormous benefits from the Prep program, which was introduced last year to replace part-time pre-school.

An independent review of the Prep Year trial in 2003 found that Prep children did better in literacy and numeracy than children who attended the previous pre-school program and those from disadvantaged backgrounds made the greatest gains. Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said Prep reinforced the Bligh Government’s commitment to education.
