Recently, the Bligh Government launched Australia's biggest giveaway of energy-saving light bulbs - one million15-watt compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. Geoff was on hand at the Ferny Hills newsagent to assist residents save around $44 a year and play their part in the fight against climate change by picking up free energy-saving light bulbs.
The Big Light Switch is part of our Government's campaign for a cleaner, greener Queensland and puts our Toward Q2: Tomorrow's Queensland vision in motion.
Geoff believes that while climate change is a global concern, it's a problem every community and individual can tackle in their own way.
For example, the average Queensland household generates 8.24 tonnes of electricity-related greenhouse gas emissions every year and that's more than the national average.
The Bligh Government's Q2 target is to cut Queenslands carbon footprint by one-third with reduced car and electricity use by 2020.
It takes less than 20 seconds to change a light bulb, but it could make a world of difference to tackling climate change and over the long-term, put some extra change in people's hip pockets.
The facts are simple: five households completely fitted with CFL bulbs use the same amount of electricity as just one household fitted with traditional incandescent bulbs. And if a household replaced four bulbs with CFLs, they could save $44 a year and almost $500 over the life of the CFL bulb. A small change to make big savings.
