Integrity & Accountability Discussion Paper

18, August 2009

Premier Bligh recently announced that the State Government had issued a Discussion Paper addressing integrity and accountability issues, and sought submissions from the wider community in response to the Paper. The time has come for a frank and open public discussion on a number of integrity and accountability issues and Geoff encouraged members of the local community to have a say.

This discussion is another step forward in the State Government's nation-leading reform agenda. It looks at the systems in place, and will explore what more can be done to improve things for the future. Key issues raised in the Paper include:

  • Legislating conflict of interest disclosures;
  • Banning how-to-vote-cards;
  • Capping or banning political donations, and increasing public funding of political parties as a result;
  • Capping election campaign expenditure, including political advertising;
  • Expanding the CMCs powers to investigate non-commercial Government-owned corporations; and
  • Boosting legislative protection for whistleblowers.

Importantly, the Paper also gives Queenslanders a voice in this process. The State Government is committed to listening to that voice because we know that the job of delivering accountability and transparency in Government is never done.
