Stepping out safely in Main Street Samford with Moreton Bay Regional Council Cr Bob Millar.
A $33,000 traffic refuge in Samford Valley’s busy Main Street has been opened and is already providing a safer crossing for thankful residents, Member for Ferny Grove Geoff Wilson said.
Mr Wilson successfully lobbied the Department of Main Roads last year to construct the refuge with strong support from Councillor Bob Millar and the Samford Progress Association.
The refuge provides a break from traffic in the middle of the road which allows pedestrians to avoid dangerous dashes into traffic.
“Not many people would realise that Main Street is actually a main road that is looked after by the Queensland Government’s Department of Main Roads,” Geoff Wilson said.
“A couple of years ago, to improve safety I got the Department to reduce the speed limit to 50km/hour,” Geoff Wilson said.
“This is a great example of the various levels of government and local community organisations such as the Samford Progress Association working together to achieve positive outcomes for residents,” he said.
Cr Bob Millar said he welcomed the safe addition to the busy road.
“This will be a great benefit to the safety of elderly residents and young school children,” he said.
“As a village resident, I am regularly seeing the refuge being used and often receive positive feedback from pedestrians who no longer have to dice with the busy traffic volumes on Main Street," he said.
The refuge was completed in December by the Department of Main Roads.
