The Queensland Government has set aside $45,000 in the State Budget to make bus travel to and from school safer for Ferny Grove State High School students.
Member for Ferny Grove Geoff Wilson said today that he was glad to see funding allocated for safety works outside Ferny Grove State High School, on McGinn Road.
Mr Wilson said he had asked Treasurer Andrew Fraser to provide funding to Council, which is responsible for the road, so it could upgrade the pickup and crossing facilities at Ferny Grove State High.
“I have spoken to many members of our community who feel the school has inadequate crossing facilities and is an accident waiting to happen,” he said.
“The school has had to employ two police officers to direct cars and pedestrians in order to keep students safe.
“The amount of cars using this road has increased significantly in the last five years, and school students should not have to wait five minutes to safely cross the road.
“I would like to see an extension of the bus bay and a kerb extension to create a safe crossing point for students.
“Locals have been very clear on the need to add safety measures at Ferny Grove High, and I am glad that that the Treasurer has listened to our community and granted these funds.
“I have spoken with Minister for Main Roads Craig Wallace about the issue, and he shares our concerns.
“Now that the Treasurer has granted these funds, it is up to Brisbane City Council to work out what safety measures they can put in place to ensure that Ferny Grove students can safely get to and from school.”
